Die Auswahl an Wörtern ist sehr breit, weil offensichtlich niemand sich die Mühe machen wollte, bedrohte Wörter auszusuchen.
Just a minute – is that the Verein Deutsche Sprache I’ve encountered before? The one that often criticizes words for no comprehensible reason? Ah well – no wonder they have such a comprehensive list of words.
I did get some mockery last year for using the term Aufboden instead of Dachboden. Maybe I should adopt that. The term is normal in the dialect of the person I learnt it from, but no-one else had ever heard of it. However, the site isn’t offering that.

Off topic, aber doch verwandt: Ich hoffe, dass wir hier im Transblawg Ihre Auffassung zum deutschen Begriff Deal verkuenden.
In den USA gibt es den Begriff Plea Agreement, doch deutsche Blogs usw. benutzen immer wieder den Begriff Deal. Wenn sich das durchsetzt, kommen irgendwann Deutschsprachige in die USA und benutzen den Begriff genauso wie sie sich mit dem Handy unverstaendlich machen. Oder wie beurteilt das Transblawg die Lage?
Clemens: Ja, stimmt, es ist manchmal schwierig, Neudeutsch ins Englische zu übersetzen! Ich werde in den nächsten Tagen einen gesonderten Eintrag machen.
Aber das Wort Deal hat sich seit Jahren eingebürgert, nicht nur in Weblogs, auch in den Zeitungen. Ich habe es vor Jahren am amerikanischen Gericht in Fürth gehört, als uns das Prozedere auf Deutsch erklärt wurde. Vor zwanzig Jahren sagten wir manchmal Geständnishandel dazu.

My eye fell on the word “entwachen” and I clicked it. The link took me to a site that boasts of being “canoonet Powered by Canoo Products” (surely that’s one in the eye for the Verein Deutsche Sprache!), which said that the word was not in its dictionary, but could be parsed in three different ways:
“Ente+wach, entwach, Adjektiv” (as awake as a drake, or words to that effect).
“Ente+Wache, Entwache, Nomen” (I suppose that would be my guardian duckling)
“Präfix ent+wachen, entwachen, Verb” (which seems to be unwaking, perhaps a parallel morphological composition along the lines of “undead”)
Dare we hope that the “Verein Deutsche Sprache” is actually pulling its own leg by including the word in its list? (Do those guys actually have a sense of humour?)
That is terrible. They haven’t got any humour, have they? Did they get the list from a spellchecker? Although Entenwache might be appropriate in these times of bird flu.
Entenwache – the mind boggles. I wonder how much time you’d get for calling a German copper “ducky”. (There was a court case some time ago because somebody used “du” to a policeman. Oh for the days when there was enough crime to keep the constable satisfied!)
A brilliant idea Margaret..indeed so much so that it inspired me to become a “Wortpate” for “Mobiltelefon” …. the word “Handy” sends shivers down my back every time I hear it

Hmm – they are also trying to save English words – try inputing “sector” or “donkey”, both of which I found within about two minutes – there’s probably hundreds more waiting to be found…
