  1. There’s a real killer on German TV at the moment. One of the main commercial channels is running a reality “talent” show called “Voice of Germany”. Except that the voiceover in all the ads trailing this new show talk about the “Woice of Germany”.
It’s not an uncommon mistake, I suppose. A lot of people seem to mix up their Vs and Ws when they try to speak English. But why do they do that?

    • I think it must be a mental block related to the spelling differences. I used to use as a tonguetwister ‘Victor always wears a warm woollen vest, especially in winter’.

      • It is a very common mistake – I remember being made fun of for my pronunciation of “wideo” – it’s not just a mental block related to spelling differences, I just didn’t hear the difference. I found it fairly easy to get used to the fact that in English the letter w was different to the German version but then there’s the tendency to pronounce v like German w. (They’re not exactly the same.) It’s not entirely a problem of voicelessness but related to it. (Not being a phonologist I lack the necessary terms to describe this phenomenon.)
