It also avoids terms of art. Here is an example:

bq. Divorce is not just about getting separated.
Divorce dissolves the marriage bond and the matrimonial property scheme, which may have several legal consequences.
In most Member States, therefore, divorce must be granted by a judicial authority, which will also decide, where applicable, on:
questions of parental responsibility,
the division of property and the dissolution of the matrimonial property scheme,
maintenance to be paid by one spouse to the other or to children.
Divorce may be requested by both spouses (divorce by mutual agreement or joint request) or by one of them.
However, the practicalities of procedure and the admissible grounds for divorce vary from one Member State to another.

Durch die Scheidung einer Ehe werden die durch Eheschließung eingegangenen Bindungen gelöst und der eheliche Güterstand aufgehoben. Daraus können eine Vielzahl von Rechtsfolgen erwachsen.

Allerdings unterscheiden sich die Verfahren und die zulässigen Scheidungsgründe von Mitgliedstaat zu Mitgliedstaat.

Here, for example, ‘matrimonial property scheme’ and ‘Güterstand’ are not translations of each other, but perform the same function in the English and German texts; but ‘elterliche Verantwortung’ seems to be a translation of the English term of art ‘parental responsibility’.

In the case of each area of law, it is possible to select it and then move from language to language. There is also a choice marked ‘international law’, which will describe international conventions relating to the subject.
