The ABA Journal reports that an Ohio court found money paid to litigants void as champerty and maintenance.

British? American? Both are obsolete terms in both Britain and America, as far as I know.

Interim Settlement Funding Corp. is a law-loan company. It lent the defendant $6,000 in return for her later paying it $16,800 if the case was over within 12 months, and increasing amounts if it took longer.

She refused to pay – she paid back the $6,000 plus 8% interest. She then sued the companies, asking the court to find the contract void. Continue reading →

Via beSpacific, The American Society of International Law has created a database, EISIL, with a variety of information and links. It’s not all developed yet. Thus the section on Private International Law should have links to the Hague Conventions, but the links don’t work yet.
Under General International Law, the link to the Treaty of Westphalia does, though! There are also to be research guides. Looks promising.

Walt Disney has a no fly zone over Disneyland and Disneyworld. In connection with anti-terrorism measures, this was approved by Congress in February and upheld by a federal court in June. Planes must be at least 3,000 feet up. Philip Greenspun (who flies) says, in an article on the stock market:

bq. Ever since the dawn of aviation it has been held that airspace belongs to the public and is to be regulated for the benefit of all by the FAA.

This is news to me. I learnt that if you own land (OK, only the Crown can own land in England and Wales … ), you own it from the centre of the earth to the sky, although someone else may have rights to the subterranean minerals and the Civil Aviation Act creates exceptions for planes flying through ‚your’ airspace. But you can certainly stop someone placing overhead advertising so it enters your airspace. Continue reading →

(Via Blogalization): The Times of Malta reports that things have gone wrong in the translation into Maltese of the draft EU constitution.

Mysteriously, they write:

bq. Readers of The Times yesterday had a field day passing on via e-mail and telephone to friends and acquaintances the howlers in the Maltese translation of the EU draft constitution.
Probably the biggest was the literal translation of ‘advisory bodies’ as igsma tal-pariri.

I love the last sentence.

The article goes into some detail about the number and recruitment of translators, workload and payment problems.
