The Fürth Sparkasse is a blot on the landscape with its multi-storey building sticking out like a sore thumb. On top of this it has now placed a webcam. If that link doesn’t work, you go to the Sparkasse site, click on the tab ‘Ihre Sparkasse’, and at the bottom of the left list is the webcam.

I must say Fürth looks a lot better at ground level (it has over 2000 listed buildings), although one advantage of this view is that it does not show the Sparkasse itself. The whole centre of the picture is an area of inner courtyards and back buildings, all very interesting if you manage to get into it. The Schwabacher Straße – pedestrian zone – runs from the bottom left (square flat-roofed building at the bottom left is Woolworths) and I am somewhere down there.

In the mid-distance is a green area – Stadpark and flood plain – and the trees mark the River Pegnitz coming from Nuremberg (the Rednitz and Regnitz cannot be seen). Towers: left St. Martin, then the Rathaus, then right Unsere Liebe Frau. A largish low dome in the mid-right is the theatre.

I have been using TimeSlice for Windows for some years to track time (it exists for Mac too).

Michael at Translate This! recommends Time Stamp (donationware).

There are many other programs out there.

erscheint eine Online-Umfrage im Popup-Fenster. Man kann seine Meinung zum Fachwörterbuchmarkt, Preise, Bedarf usw. dem Langenscheidt-Verlag mitteilen.

Leider müssen alle Felder ausgefüllt werden, bevor man weitergehen kann. Am Ende muss man nicht den eigenen Name und die eigene Adresse angeben, sondern kann das Fenster schliessen. Die Details sind nur nötig, wenn man den Buchpreis haben möchte.

I am a bit surprised at the term Strafschäden. I would normally write Strafschadensersatz. We talk about damage (singular, Schaden) and damages (plural, Schadensersatz), but German doesn’t do this.

But I got 79 ghits for Strafschäden, sometimes in combination with Folgeschäden, where the word Schäden has the meaning of damage. What is the English original of this:

EGAL OB FÜR ZUFÄLLIGE, INDIREKTE, BESONDERE, FOLGESCHÄDEN ODER STRAFSCHÄDEN (SO GENANNTE “STRAFBESCHÄDIGUNGEN”) JEGLICHER ART.

I need only go to the Adobe terms quoted yesterday:

FOR ANY SPECIAL, PUNITIVE, INCIDENTAL, INDIRECT, OR CONSEQUENTIAL DAMAGES OF ANY KIND, OR ANY DAMAGES WHATSOEVER…

Clearly the whole passage refers to Schaden(s)ersatz, not Schaden! It may well be that the translator can choose whether to refer to ‘consequential damage’ rather than ‘compensation/damages for consequential damage’, but that doesn’t mean we can mix them up.

I can only say, ‘Deutsche Sprache schwere Sprache’.

I’m getting some visitors from a blog entry by Will Femia at Clicked. There is a paragraph there on translation.

I’m not sure how new the translation services are, and I believe the invitation to translate Google’s interface has been around for some time. The translation services as such are still machine translation afaik. I reported it on May 19, 2004.

Here is a long disclaimer clause. It’s nearly 7.5 thousand words long, but you can use small print.

Is that not a translation error? But a Google search produces a lot of other hits – this is not necessarily a text that originated at Adobe.

Here is a better version of the ‘soient’:
