There is also a free public lecture on forensic phonetics in the evening.

Talks on the City University M.A., the Metropolitan Police, and the ‘new national standards in translation’ being developed by CILT.

Eine Lanze für seine Parteifreundin Pauli bricht Bernd Obst, Bürgermeister von Cadolzburg. Er bewundert den Mut, „den die Landrätin aufbringt, um zu sagen, was sie denkt“. Das habe nichts mit Nestbeschmutzung zu tun, zumal Pauli „viel Wahres sagt“. Auch den Internetvorstoß will Obst nicht in Bausch und Bogen verdammen. Zwar bevorzuge er den „innerparteilichen Weg“, aber: „Es ist ein absolut basisdemokratisches Element, die Bürger nach ihrer Meinung zu fragen.“

Die meisten anderen Kommentare sahen keine Notwendigkeit, die Bevölkerung einzubeziehen in die Frage, ob Stoiber 2008 wieder kandidieren soll. Einige waren böse:

Gabriele Pauli, who represents part of Fürth for the CSU in the Bavarian Landtag, has a forum on her site (now closed for new entries) where people can comment on whether Edmund Stoiber should stand for election again in 2008. Most of the CSU would prefer this topic to be discussed only within the party.

Another Neudeutsch term: Best Ager. This has been around for some time. I see that www.proz.com dealt with it in 2003, although some of the answers translated it in the wrong direction. Here’s a model agency for these people.

It means the over-forties in marketing speak. I recommend a Google image search on “best ager”.

Some Germans think the English word gift is funny, because in German Gift means poison. They have the same origin – something you give someone. Dose has the same idea.

Is this the origin of the Neudeutsch word givings, which I encountered on an ITI list today?

Along the same lines, I recently discovered that sideboard and highboard are items a German office worker might have behind his or her desk. This is for those who believed that a sideboard belongs in a dining room and a highboard above a swimming pool.

Translators into English have to be careful nowadays.
