erscheint eine Online-Umfrage im Popup-Fenster. Man kann seine Meinung zum Fachwörterbuchmarkt, Preise, Bedarf usw. dem Langenscheidt-Verlag mitteilen.

Leider müssen alle Felder ausgefüllt werden, bevor man weitergehen kann. Am Ende muss man nicht den eigenen Name und die eigene Adresse angeben, sondern kann das Fenster schliessen. Die Details sind nur nötig, wenn man den Buchpreis haben möchte.

I am a bit surprised at the term Strafschäden. I would normally write Strafschadensersatz. We talk about damage (singular, Schaden) and damages (plural, Schadensersatz), but German doesn’t do this.

But I got 79 ghits for Strafschäden, sometimes in combination with Folgeschäden, where the word Schäden has the meaning of damage. What is the English original of this:

EGAL OB FÜR ZUFÄLLIGE, INDIREKTE, BESONDERE, FOLGESCHÄDEN ODER STRAFSCHÄDEN (SO GENANNTE “STRAFBESCHÄDIGUNGEN”) JEGLICHER ART.

I need only go to the Adobe terms quoted yesterday:

FOR ANY SPECIAL, PUNITIVE, INCIDENTAL, INDIRECT, OR CONSEQUENTIAL DAMAGES OF ANY KIND, OR ANY DAMAGES WHATSOEVER…

Clearly the whole passage refers to Schaden(s)ersatz, not Schaden! It may well be that the translator can choose whether to refer to ‘consequential damage’ rather than ‘compensation/damages for consequential damage’, but that doesn’t mean we can mix them up.

I can only say, ‘Deutsche Sprache schwere Sprache’.

I’m getting some visitors from a blog entry by Will Femia at Clicked. There is a paragraph there on translation.

I’m not sure how new the translation services are, and I believe the invitation to translate Google’s interface has been around for some time. The translation services as such are still machine translation afaik. I reported it on May 19, 2004.
